Roosters Chicken N Ro-Jo’s has been a beloved part of the San Angelo community for over 16 years with its history deeply rooted in family tradition. The story begins with a humble start and an original breaded chicken recipe created by Rusty and Sherry Swanson. The journey of Roosters, however, began years before than when this dynamic duo met in the late 70’s.

At the time, Rusty was working for his parents’ franchise, the Original KFC, while Sherry had a job at a local bank. After the couple married and began their family, they made the decision for Sherry to leave the bank and prepare for the next phase of their lives. Shortly after, the local KFC franchise sold to Scott Foods and Rusty stayed on for a period of time to help ensure the success of the business.

In the years that followed, life took some unexpected turns. Their second child was born in 1987, and soon after Rusty felt a calling to attend bible college at Christ for the Nations Institute (CFNI) in Dallas, Texas. Despite initial reservations about moving so far away from family (and a newly purchased home), they prayed for guidance and God answered. It was that same week they decided to sell their home and enroll at CFNI. They graduated just a few short years later knowing there was a calling on their hearts. A calling to impact people. They returned to San Angelo to serve as youth and worship pastors at Word of Life Assembly of God.

By the late 1990s, they ventured into different careers, with Rusty working at a tire repair shop on Concho Street and later working in construction. At the same time, Sherry took on a role at Texas Bank doing what their family has always been known for – making a difference.

Deep down, they both knew they had a desire to do something more — something meaningful.

The idea for Roosters Chicken N Ro-Jo’s came when they saw the buildings, once leased to KFC, sitting empty after the local franchise filed for bankruptcy. The buildings were in disrepair, but the couple saw potential. After much prayer and discussion, they made the decision to open a new venture in the very same buildings.

They worked hard to renovate and breathe new life into the locations, again. With the blessing and support of the Swanson family secured, Roosters was officially born. What began as an idea grew into a thriving restaurant, bringing together Rusty’s original breaded chicken recipe with new offerings for the San Angelo community. Plus a throw-back menu item well-loved by the community… we know them as San Angelo’s only Ro-Jo’s!

Roosters stands to this day as a testament to their journey—built on faith, family, and a commitment to serving their community. With quality food and genuine hospitality, the restaurant continues to be a local favorite. They serve up delicious meals and maintain their roots as a family-run business.
